Dandelions for Dinner

Saturday, May 31st, 2008Share This Comments (0)

Most people dread the sight of dandelions, as they are seen as more of a pesky weed than a lovely edible flower. Many people would not look at this flower and think of dinner. But those who are a bit more knowledgeable on this subject are aware of the fact that both the flowers and the roots can be eaten.

Dandelions

The best thing about this flower is that it is readily available; there are scores of them all around us. In essence, this is almost free food.

This flowery food can be used in a few different ways. By mashing up the leaves you can make a lovely salad. They give a peppery flavor to a regular salad. Maybe you haven't paid attention but there are many people who are already out by the roadside picking their next salad. The yellow heads of the flower can also be eaten in what is called Dandelion Tempura.

So if your lawn is overrun with dandelions there is a simple and tasty way to get rid of these pests.

CannasUsually we can see cannas in the median strips beside the road; they are used by many cities to decorate the sides of their roads. However they can also be planted in our gardens.

Not long ago this flower was deemed to be very old-fashioned. Nowadays there are many new hybrids which are bringing back its popularity, with many new lovely pastel shades.

This is an ornamental type flower because it has huge eye-catching leaves and flowers. Some varieties of this flower can grow to a height of eight feet, with pink, yellow or red flowers. The shorter types of cannas grow to height of about 2 feet.

Horticulturist Dan Benaricik says that cannas can be used in flower beds and in containers. "I like the cannas' foliage and their presence in the garden," says Benaricik about this flower.

These flowers should be placed in the garden with some thought, because if they are left alone their unique colour can be a bit overwhelming. It is best to put larger groups of cannas among another type of flower.

Art-O-Mat Exhibiting FlowersEndless Inspiration is an art exhibit being held on Long Island from May 15th to June 22nd. The pieces of art are based around depictions of flowers. The artists depict flowers in many ways intensely and personally.

Some of the flowers span the entire canvases, while another series of works depicts the continual cycle of human history. There are other flowers cast in clay and other sculptures of blooms, while other artists are exhibiting close up photographs of flowers.

Tamar Gasparian-Chester, who is the curator of this exhibit, says: "Each artist has been inspired and has communicated vision through a flower. We all see flowers differently, and I invite you to find your inspiration in them."

One of the most important aspects of gardening is the soil; if something isn't in order with your soil then your flowers are not going to be as beautiful as you would like them to be.

soilThe quality of your soil should be top notch. If it is good quality then you will not need to water your flowers as much and they will bloom more beautifully. The best way to make sure your soil is at its best is to have it analyzed checking for quality. If it is full of nutrients then it can be left alone.

If your soil turns out to have poor quality, there are some things that you can do to help. Removing weeds, debris, trash is the first thing you can do, and then you need to really loosen the soil. Afterwards, peat moss can be added to the earth. If your soil is acid then some lime can be added to neutralize this problem. If it's clayey then sand can be added. With all this done some organic fertilizer can be put out. Finally, all the new ingredients you have added to the soil can be mixed together and loosened as well.

If you find that the quality of your soil is extremely poor or that you have neither time nor money, then you'll find that you have to replace the soil. If you find yourself in this situation then you should buy nutrient-rich soil of the best quality.

The residents of Ozark are eagerly awaiting the Ozark Empire Fair. Though there is still a bit of a wait for that event, flowers are already being planted to give the fairgrounds a fresh spring look.

Ozark Fair

This weekend about 12,000 flowers were planted with the help of 48 volunteers.

The grounds are best known for their beautiful flowers, which is why the volunteers are loyal, turning up every year doing their work with a bit of pride.

Nancy Bright the acting general manager of the fair says, "We see people who say they want to plant this bed because I plant this one every year and they take a lot of pride in the fact that they’re the ones who put those in and that they look great for all guests to enjoy."

All of the volunteers who have planted their weekend away will get free tickets to come to the fair and to have a lot at the results of their efforts.
